Illustration Friday: Totem

These three whimsical natives are based on the work of Peter Wolf Toth, who I discovered during my totem research. His Trail of the Whispering Giants is a collection of over 70 carved statues found in each of the states and two Canadian provinces. Each statue resembles a native of the region in which it’s found. In my cartoon version, the statue on the left honours the Chippewa Indians in Michigan, center represents the Assateague Indians in Maryland, and the right statue is a tribute to the Ojibwe in Wisconsin.

“Has anyone seen Smokey?”

This drawing was inspired by that classic stuffed animal scene in the movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
