Illustration Friday: Totem

These three whimsical natives are based on the work of Peter Wolf Toth, who I discovered during my totem research. His Trail of the Whispering Giants is a collection of over 70 carved statues found in each of the states and two Canadian provinces. Each statue resembles a native of the region in which it’s found. In my cartoon version, the statue on the left honours the Chippewa Indians in Michigan, center represents the¬†Assateague Indians in Maryland, and the right statue is a tribute to the¬†Ojibwe in Wisconsin.

“Has anyone seen Smokey?”

This drawing was inspired by that classic stuffed animal scene in the movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
